چکیده

This paper aims at using the Rayleigh waves which travel in the front of high speed trains (HST) to detect underground cavities within a silty ground. First, computer results show that subsurface cavities provide a filtering effect on the spectra of Rayleigh waves within a wavelength range in relation with the depth of the cavity. Then, seismic data have been collected at the front of the HST on a specific test-site. They show a 3 to 6 dB magnitude variation on the power spectra in the vicinity of the cavity axis for the wavelengths ranging from 8 to 20 meters. A similar result has been observed from the background noise but affecting larger wavelengths.

CFD Simulation of High-speed Trains: Train-induced Wind Conditions on Trackside Installations

Speed is the created air flow as well as slipstream effects as the trains move. These effects can have some level of impact on fuel and energy efficiency  of  the  train,  but  their  other  important  outcome  is  the emergence of turbulent flows at higher speeds which can cause aerodynamic  drag  forces  followed  by  noise  and  vibration.  Thus, slipstream effects have significant importanc...

Problem of Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Diffusion

In this work, the problem of Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the context of the theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The formulation is applied to a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic half space with mass diffusion at the stress free, isothermal, isoconcentrated boundary. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obt...

Rayleigh Wave in an Incompressible Fibre-Reinforced Elastic Solid Half-Space

In this paper, the equation of motion for an incompressible transversely isotropic fibre-reinforced elastic solid is derived in terms of a scalar function.   The general solution of the equation of motion is obtained, which satisfies the required radiation condition.  The appropriate traction free boundary conditions are also satisfied by the solution to obtain the required secular equation for...

Modelling of ground-borne vibration when the train speed approaches the critical speed

When trains run on soft ground, large deflections of the track and vibration of the ground can occur when the train speed approaches the speed of Rayleigh waves in the ground. Modelling is helpful to understand and mitigate such critical velocity effects. Here, a three-dimensional time-domain model of a load moving on a track and ground has been developed in the finite element software ABAQUS. ...
